The Gates of the City

Pastor John Doonan

The Horse Gate #9

The Horse Gate brings to mind the image of these powerful and beautiful animals. The wind blowing through your hair, and the pulsing muscles of the charger beneath you as you race to your goal. Such a delightful vision of grace and power.

Our fellowship with one another in church is very important. Many Christians walk away from their church for a combination of reasons. Hurt, fear, a misunderstanding leading to anger, or having an agenda of one’s own are just a few reasons many resist a church affiliation. How can any of this possibly tie in with the horse gate? The church is God’s city of refuge for His people. We are a family, a home for others who are hurting, lost, afraid, confused, and broken. Remember the state you were in the first day you entered through our church doors? When others come in our fellowship, they too can find refuge. We are a city in which anyone can enter though overwhelmed by their most terrible circumstances and find entrance to Jesus Christ. Reclaiming the balance in their lives through the preaching of the Gospel while being fulfilled, and growing in knowledge that they might overcome the curses that touch everyone of our lives.

As we learned from our last two articles the Water Gate, which is the Word of God and the Fountain Gate which represents the Spirit of God. These truths establish and fulfill us. The Word of God and Spirit of God can not be without each other or there is no fulfillment or completion. A Christian filled with just Scripture and without the Spirit is not complete. The same is true for those filled with the Spirit yet without Scripture. We are to understand the Word of God and operate by His Spirit.

God has provided yet another gate and that is the Horse Gate. The horses mentioned in Revelations where used in war, to establish, and to conquer. In David and Ezekiel, the horses mentioned came forth to fulfill the Word of God and to do warfare in this earth. Thus the horse represents warfare. When Jesus rode into Jerusalem upon a donkey. He wasn’t declaring war on the city of Jerusalem. He came in peace.

Nehemiah 3:28 From above the horse gate repaired the priests, every one over against his house.

The priests repairing the Horse Gate represent the satisfying of their duties in the office of mediation. The Horse Gate acts as mediation between God and man not just for Biblical times but for us today in our priestly duties. Fathers are considered the head, (priest) of their household and our job is to administer the Word of God, by the Spirit of God, following His direction for our household.

It’s not enough to know you’re supposed to be blessed and that God wants to bless you. You have to receive your blessing. It’s not enough to know that by His stripes we were healed. You have to receive your healing. We can get angry shaking our fists at God wondering why He’s not doing what He promised in His Word, or we can have a hard time grasping the simplicity that is God’s truth – His Word. We are so preoccupied by wanting what we desire, looking for shooting stars to wish upon through every new wind of doctrine that we totally miss God. We either never hear what He has for our lives, or those that hear never make it to the next gate.

As Christians, we need to erect a strong hold, which Satan cannot demolish. God has equipped His people with His Word enabling us to triumph over and receive tribute on what He promised. We are to go forth as conquerors.

Picture the Word of God entering the world through the gate, on a donkey, as a peaceful ambassador of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We come in peace first, not in antagonism. The world is to obey, submit, and pay tribute to Jesus who has conquered; thus, we receive our blessing. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, then you have Him in you, and Jesus is more than a conqueror. It is not our flesh that conquers but the living Spirit of Jesus Christ abiding in us that has already gone before us and conquered. If we have gone in peace and by faith, believing God’s Word, and the world refuses to submit that blessing to us then it is they who have declared war.

Jesus first entered the city upon a donkey, in peace. He was arrested, tried, humiliated, then crucified. He then changed His mount and battled upon His war-horse conquering and receiving the keys of the city. The pattern was laid, the mold was cast for us.

Satan does not want us to be blessed. He has declared war so we must prepare ourselves for battle and the siege of the city. God has equipped us with weapons of warfare and the ability to go forth into this world conquering. We will do what is necessary so that the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit is demonstrated through His Word. It is not in our own ability but we are completely equipped to do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Praise God we don’t have to perform just show up in faith!

Without the weapons of warfare, we are unable to obtain all God wants us to have. If we can’t look at death, doubt, fear, and all the curses that surround and touch us as a soldier ready to do battle, we are easily defeated by the overwhelming fear of failure. This is where the break down begins. We start thinking since the world didn’t give up the blessing, maybe we didn’t hear God correctly, and thus we abandon the battle. Not only, this battle but we don’t even show up for the war. The enemy absolutely does not care if we have heard from God or not, and no battle is pleasant, but what circle do you prefer to be in, the winners, or the vanquished? You absolutely cannot lose with God. Bottom line is soldiers, who don’t show up on the battlefield, never win battles.

God has shown us warfare exists and gives detailed instructions on how to, when to, and where to. Being afraid, not believing, and trusting keeps many petrified rather than moving forward and showing up for the crusade. An army that does not believe it can win will never be triumphant. Yes, there is a chance one might die on the battlefield, which is what every soldier faces going to war. So what . . . We lose nothing if we know Jesus as our personal Savior for to die is gain. Imagine seeing Jesus face to face. Think I’m going to have a Hallelujah Glory Fit!

The battles Christians fight are not flesh against flesh but against princi-palities and powers in the spiritual realm. Our all-knowing God, who loves us so much, gives us His wisdom on how to fight in the spiritual realm. Very simple— without the Spirit of God and the Word of God we don’t do battle.

Daily, we diligently seek God in His Word being renewed and refreshed, being established and strengthened that we may face the devil. When the enemy tries to muddle our thoughts, giving us doubts of unworthiness, we can boldly stand up to our enemy proclaiming, "we are the righteousness of God in Christ!"

We prepare ourselves for battle by embracing the sword, the Bible— the Word of God. In His Word, we are instructed to put on the whole Armor of God.

Helmet of Salvation, we didn’t deserve but God gave it to us.

Breastplate of Righteousness, we didn’t deserve it but God gave it to us.

Girded in Truth, we didn’t deserve it but God gave it to us.

Shod in the Gospel of Peace— that’s right we didn’t— and God gave it despite our unworthiness.

Above all the Shield of Faith, and the Sword of the Spirit. Scripture filled and Spirit filled warriors.

It is the Grace of God, which has equipped us abundantly for warfare. Theses are not weapons the enemy gives, or even uses. The power these poor wretches have flaunted is a lie. The enemy does not have one wisp of creative power.

Saints, what God has given is much more powerful then those things of this world. In 1Corinthians chapter 10, we see God’s people all ate the same spiritual meat and drank of the same spiritual drink of that spiritual Rock which is Jesus. Yet many were overthrown in the wilderness, how could that be?

Verse 13 says, there hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

There are strong holds today as well that continue to defeat and overthrow many Christian lives. Why? Because they do not resist. God calls us to pray over all things, so we begin to surround the enemy and his evil circumstances in our lives that are trying to pull us down. Begin to pray in the Spirit. God gave us the gift of tongues because His ways are not our ways, praying in our own knowledge when facing serious battle is not wisdom. When we put God’s armor on and cleave to His Sword the enemies scatter in fear. We are to resist the devil and his demons lest we be overthrown.

When we made that change of our sin nature, for the nature of Jesus, we became new creatures. The old has passed away. For better clarification going back to doing things, the way we used to do them in this world does not work for us any longer. It can’t. Everything is new. God does not give weapons that are carnal, (of this world). We are saved, not one that is lost and forsaken. We are the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ, no longer the enemy so we are already in a winning position.

We stand in truth, empowered by God to rid ourselves of the waste, and to complete the course with grace and splendor. The preaching of the Cross is the power of God, and as the Gospel of the Cross is proclaimed by our lips. It immediately disarms the enemy. Lift up your Shield of Faith for the evil one will surely throw every fiery dart at us. Christians that never rise up to challenge the enemy will never overcome and taste God’s glorious victories. If we don’t realize that the curses here in this earth are genuine and destructive, we won’t show up on the battlefield. You can’t live your life with your head buried in the sand. We must fulfill our calling as believers.

As a body, we come together as God’s army ready to do warfare against the enemy. Coming together corporately as the Body of Christ, the Church ministering in the Word of God and the gifts of the Spirit, that brings healing physically, emotionally, and spiritually in peoples lives. The lies, which constructed these evil strongholds, start falling down. If our faith is solid, then it is a shield that defends us from every one of those darts. It doesn’t matter what the evil one throws at us we shall not fail. We will not be discouraged, dismayed, or ashamed, and we will not die, or be defeated. We have an armor to wear now that is tailor made by God Himself to fit each individual. The armor God gave you to put on is not for someone else because it won’t fit anyone else nor is someone else’s armor fit for you. The world’s armor changes, fades, rusts, and corrupts with time. God’s armor is eternal, forever, secure, and is designed for what He has fashioned us to be.

We have the Spirit of the Living God abiding in us ready to cast down every evil imagination that exalts itself against Jesus. Spiritual warfare takes place in the soulish realm, meaning the flesh is nothing. The battlefield is in our thoughts and that is what we need to condition. If a born again Christian continues to walk in their old nature, instead of the God given new nature we will look like the little kid with an armor that doesn’t fit. One of my favorite books is "Christ The Healer" by F.F. Bosworth, it is in my opinion one of the most thorough studies on healing I have ever read. It helps equips the saints with God’s Word to face Satan because we must not fight with a carnal arsenal. It’s not our pain the enemy attacks us with, that’s just our flesh whining for us to give up. Remember it is in our soul, our thoughts and emotions he aims at. Satan tries to convince us there is no hope and we are not worthy to receive anything from God. If we believe the lie we don’t show up for the contest and the devil wins by default. He can never win when the saints show up for battle. The war is already finished, forever settled in heaven.

Jude verse 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Christians are instructed to contend for the faith. Everybody else has plenty of advise on why we shouldn’t have faith in miracle working power of the cross, and that God doesn’t do things the way the Bible says any longer. Discouraging words, words of death surround us trying to get us to put away our horse. We are to shut up and not rock the boat. We are to take whatever is dished out to us humbly lest we upset the more sensitive. Swords were not designed for the hypersensitive; they leave a trail of destruction in their paths. We throw all care and reason away, paying no attention to negative people or thoughts, and mount our war-horse, prepared for battle against the enemy that has defied God.

2 Samuel 23:9 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away:

10 He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand cleaved unto the sword: and the Lord wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil.

David and his mighty men of valor contended for the faith. They went out with the Word of God in their hand and were so connected to the Word from the beginning of the battle through the heat of it, that when the end of the battle came they couldn’t let go of the sword even if they wanted to. The Word was everything to David, for in it was the power that sustained his life and enabled him to do what he had to do to win by the miracle working power of God. Trusting and depending on the Word of God and cleaving to it with every muscle, and thought. The very heart of our being is changed forever.

We have the truth, we are born of the incorruptible seed of the Word of God, and it’s becoming like one with the sword. Let us train our minds to be disciplined, making a commitment to submit to God’s will. Cleave to the Word and before we know it our thoughts and actions automatically hold up that Word. There are only two options when it looks like warfare is about to begin. We are totally committed to the Lord by faith trusting and depending on His Word, or we protect ourselves putting our life in jeopardy.

God has set us upon a horse and shown us the gateway to go forth and conquer and fulfill the call God has on our lives. We come together before God knowing we are a part of an army, a purpose, and a vision. We are a part of the Word of God that is working in our lives. It’s not about going to church being blessed financially, or being healed, and Praise God I’m moving on. Thinking that the message of the Gospel is not needed anymore is playing Russian roulette with your life. It is the Body of Christ that is disciplined, committed to Jesus, showing up on the battlefield, dressed in armor tailored just for us, and mounted on our horse, with our hands cleaving to the sword of the Word that will win the battle. In unity we stand, divided we fall. As the body, we need each other and the gifts God has given each one of us standing together as an army ready for warfare.

Seasoned in the Word we have boldness and confidence in the weapons God had given us for our warfare. They are Spiritual weapons connected to the throne of God. Everything in this world is an illusion; it is made up of atoms held together by the Word of God, the real world is a Spirit world. My Bible says the devil was cast down and made powerless. Jesus said He brought their power to naught. They can’t create sickness, or poverty, all the enemy can do is lie to us, tricking us into submitting to the curse that is in the earth. Ignorance is not bliss. If you have been submitting to a lie it’s time to do warfare, casting down every evil imagination that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ.

If we are saved, how can the enemies have any power over us? They do not and it is this revelation that is enough to win any battle we enter into. If we don’t resist and stand in faith letting the God of all creation and power do the battle; we will never overcome the evil circumstances that inflict us. Our flesh cannot withstand the fiery darts of the wicked one for very long. We are the ones who have creative ability and understand the Word of God. The enemy has no authority or power over us unless we are without knowledge of our salvation, or one that is lost in the affairs of this world. Let the truth, the Salvation of Jesus Christ be established in your heart. Stand boldly with the full knowledge that we can’t lose. We can’t lose for as we hold up the Word of God filled with faith our flesh is protected and we have clearness in God’s instructions for our lives.

God loves us so much He sent His only begotten Son to die on the cross bearing all our sins, iniquity, and sickness. Jesus loves us so much that He laid His life down for us. There is no greater love then willing too lay our life down for another. If that love exists in our heart with the understanding of the power that is in that love, then we are about ready to do battle. When we allow ourselves to learn of that love, to believe such love exists, submitting to that love and following that standard of love then there is no lack in our lives and we have plenty to give.

Attitudes that are not willing to learn, to believe, and receive that love of God are the ones that give up, thinking the Churches are not for them. They have no hope and trust nothing. These attitudes are the ones that will never know the sweet tasting victory of Jesus. God’s greatest weapon is His love. Satan will never ever defeat God’s love. We submit ourselves offering this love together as the Body of Christ.

Once you are ready to come into the obedience of the Word of God and the Spirit of God committing His love, you will be complete and fully equipped for warfare We stand as mighty warriors equipped and offer ourselves up to God not for selfish gain. We offer ourselves up because our greater cause is the Cross-of Jesus Christ, the Word of truth. We contend for the faith by the Spirit of God and by His love.

We are not standing alone; the church is the army that is well seasoned, rooted, and established in the Word of God, prepared for anything, ready for everything. Let love be the motivator, the weapon used against fear. We stand in Perfect Love.

Focus on what God is able to do and give no respect to our weaknesses. Wisdom is depending on God’s weapons for warfare, they are faithful, true, and will never change. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. His Word and His Love are eternal.

God’s’ Perfect Love Casts Out All Fear.

Life Changing Grace

Not Just A Word

by: Julie Montei

I’d like to share the most incredible miracle I’ve received since becoming a member of Amazing Grace Community Church. This miracle is the life-changing grace I’ve been taught and have received there. Prior to this I had spent my entire life in church and yet had no idea what the word grace meant. All I did understand was that I could not earn the grace needed to achieve salvation. On the other hand, I had a serious misconception regarding maintaining my salvation. For me any kind of spiritual growth was impossible because of two things. First of all, I was afraid that God was displeased with me for doing everything wrong and secondly, I always feared I’d gone too far and was no longer saved. It’s amazing how I really believed God expected me to maintain what only belongs to Him, I was so far off. During these years I could not forgive myself nor receive forgiveness. As I was never sure if I were actually going to heaven and was continually wondering how many times God would save me, I had little time to be free enough to share the gospel. I could not deal with the responsibility of knowing Him better as I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to take the guilt of failing Him more.

After coming to Amazing Grace Community Church, Pastor Doonan informed me that God wasn’t mad at me. In spite of myself, I believed it and suddenly God wasn’t scary to me any more. I had made God so difficult to reach there had been no way for me to feel His compassion until I found out He was gracious, gentle, easy and kind. I’d struggled so hard yet found it’s so simple. My life is saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. When I sin, I do not ‘jump out of God’s hand’ (as I’d previously been taught). Rather, Jesus died for all my sins. I am truly forgiven. For years I’d studied so hard and yet couldn’t see this. I’m so grateful God has shown me the revelation of His grace: that ‘the just shall live by faith’ (in Him and all He’s done). Before, all I knew was that ‘the wrath of God is revealed against all unrighteousness.’ How grateful I am that I am no longer under the law but under grace. The work of the cross has paid for all my sins, and given me the life of Christ to enjoy and right standing with God.

Now I know no matter how scatter brained I am, He will not leave me or forsake me. As far as God the Father is concerned I have the mind of Christ (whether I use it or not). No matter how hard or low I am knocked down in this life, He doesn’t leave me. I can no longer stay in my pain because my treasure is not in this world. My treasure is seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus. At His throne, He truly does "give beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the Spirit of heaviness; that we might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified." Isaiah 61:3
